The President and the Oath
This week, in the context of the president and his staff, I tweeted the president “makes no distinction between government officials and private citizens.” Today I realized he thinks the same way about himself: he simply doesn’t register he’s taken an oath.
The oath separates public servants from fellow citizens in a profound way. It’s an article of faith that our government would entrust its greatest powers to a privileged few...and those few would be willing to do their duty faithfully, ethically, and well.
The words and actions of pre-candidate Trump, candidate Trump, and President-Elect Trump do not differ from the words and actions of President Trump. “We don’t have freedom of the press” is something you’d say if you weren’t charged with protecting it.
